InfraType Cycling infrastructure type Cycling infrastructure type | Protected bike lane (on-road): On-road lane that is separated from vehicular traffic by bollards, kerbs, parking or other physical separation – this separation may in some instances consist of low-profile bumps or bollards that aim to discourage but do not fully prevent accidental or intentional intrusion into the bike lane by other vehicles; Basic painted lane: On-road lane that is segregated from other traffic by paint only, typically marked by a solid painted line and accompanied by bicycle signage or painted surface pictograms; Buffered painted lane: On-road painted lane that is segregated from other traffic and/or parking by an additional painted buffer on the left, right or both sides; Shared bike/parking lane: On-road painted bike lane that also permits car parking for at least part of the day, typically either all day or outside of peak periods – these lanes may be extra wide and intended to accommodate both parked cars and people riding bikes at the same time (although with no solid or dashed painted line separating parked cars from bikes), or narrow and only reasonably permit either parking or bike riding but not both at the same time. The distinguishing feature from a parking-only lane is the presence of bicycle signage or painted surface pictograms; Intermittent/informal (on-road): These are non-exclusive or informal bicycle markings, typically represented by intermittent pictograms alongside several dashed painted lines, although sometimes they appear without dashed lines at all. These are usually painted against the kerb, minimising their footprint on the traffic lane; Shared lane (sharrows): Painted sharrows (or “shared arrows”) often prominently situated in the middle of the road or traffic lane to indicate that cars and bike riders share the road – these symbols may also in some cases indicate a designated local cycling or “shimmy” route; Shared use path (off-road): Off-road path fully shared with pedestrians – often explicitly designated using shared path surface markings or signage; Separated path (off-road): Off-road bike infrastructure that is separated from pedestrians, either physically or by a painted line or different colouration Protected bike lane (on-road), Basic painted lane, Buffered painted lane, Shared bike/parking lane, Intermittent/informal (on-road), Shared street (sharrows), Shared use path (off-road), Separated path (off-road)
