Improving Rail Replacement Information

We're providing more information when buses replace trains

New information to be included in ‘GTFS Schedule’ open dataset

We are updating the GTFS Schedule dataset to provide more detailed information when buses replace trains including:
•    Separate lines - maps will show separate lines for train and replacement buses, so bus replacement routes can be shown on roads rather than on train lines.
•    Separate colours - bus replacement will be displayed in an ‘orange colour’ instead of the same colour as the train, so passengers can clearly differentiate the two modes.
•    Clear information – line names will display as ‘Replacement Bus’ and the platform details will display ‘Replacement bus’.

The following dataset changes will be made:
•    Buses replacing trains:
      -    New rail replacement routes will be added into routes.txt and trips.txt.
•    Other configuration changes:
      -    Regional trains will have a reference to a parent stop in stops.txt, which will enable all V/Line stops to show as wheelchair accessible in open data. This change follows on from our recent release of wheelchair accessible journeys in metropolitan train trip information.
      -    Stop names will be standardised for all modes of transport in stops.txt, supporting consistency with DTP naming conventions.

What are the passenger benefits?
•    Journey planning apps can show passengers better information when buses replace trains, promoting a more informed, safe and reliable journey.
•    Passengers will be able to view separate lines and separate colours for rail replacement buses in the trip information. This will make bus replacement routes and information much clearer, helping passengers to more accurately plan their journey.
