Consolidating Access to Transport APIs
We’re making changes to how transport APIs are accessed
Access to transport APIs is changing from the Data Exchange Platform (DEP) to the Transport Victoria Open Data Portal as the next step in streamlining and consolidating our multiple open data platforms and presences into one centralised hub.
From 5 August, the following APIs will start to be hosted on the Transport Victoria Open Data Portal:
- GTFS-R Trip Updates, Service Alerts and Vehicle Positions – Metro Trains and Buses
- GTFS-R Trip Updates, Service Alerts and Vehicle Positions – Yarra Trams
Please note:
- The Heavy Vehicle Networks dataset will be retired on 29 September as this information is now managed by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator.
- The Bluetooth Travel Time and Lane Use Management Signals APIs will start to be hosted on the Transport Victoria Open Data Portal in the next few weeks and we will confirm the transition date shortly. In the meantime, please keep accessing them via DEP until further notice.
How do I keep accessing these datasets?
A two-month transition period is now in place until 29 September where these APIs will be available on both DEP and the Transport Victoria Open Data Portal.
All data users, including internal DTP staff, will need to create an account in the Transport Victoria Open Data Portal and generate a new API key by 29 September to continue accessing these APIs as the current DEP accounts and keys cannot be transferred.
Those with existing Transport Victoria Open Data Portal accounts will have an API key automatically generated and assigned to their profile for use. Please find training materials on the ‘Help and Support’ page under ‘User Guides’ if help is needed to create an account and API key.
Important note: from 30 September, DEP will be decommissioned and datasets will be no longer be accessible via the current API keys. Please makes sure you have changed how you access transport APIs by 29 September 2025.
What are the benefits of this change?
This change brings us another step closer to consolidating our open data presences into one platform to provide easy and free access to transport datasets. We want to improve access to transport open data helps so public transport users can make informed decisions about their journeys using the right information at the right time, no matter their journey planning app of choice.
How do I get more information?
This change is being made as part of the Public Transport Data Program. Please email the team on PTdataprogram@transport.vic.gov.au if you need more information.
